You can apply once you have your provisional licence and not before your 17th birthday. 

The quickest way to apply for your theory tests is online at GOV.uk

Before you can start driving on the road you’ll need a provisional licence, which currently costs £34.

Theory Tests

Before you start for Cars

You need your:

  • UK driving licence number
  • email address – you have to book by phone if you don’t have one
  • credit or debit card

You must have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the last 12 months before the day you take your theory test which costs £23. When you book your test, say if you have a reading difficulty, health condition or disability.

When you don’t need a theory test

You don’t need to take a theory test before you book a driving test to upgrade from an automatic car licence to a manual car licence

Before you start for the ADI Part 1 test

You need your:

  • UK driving licence number
  • personal reference number from DVSA
  • email address – you have to book by phone if you don’t have one
  • credit or debit card

It costs £81 for an ADI part 1 test
